God Is Here Even Now
You don't have to resolve anything first to sit down beside him. He already loves you before you say one brave word, and he loves you just as much if this morning you're mostly afraid.
What matters right now isn't how ready you are for what he's asking. What matters is that there's a place in you he can already reach, this minute.
Today's Guiding Word
"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." Matthew 16:25
This same Sunday, the prophet Jeremiah admits what this feels like from the inside: "You duped me, O Lord, and I let myself be duped" (Jeremiah 20:9). He's not happy about it, because the word burning in him won't let him rest, and he can't hold it in. And Paul asks you to offer your body as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1): not a call to death, but to life.
Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence
Peter meant well when he pulled Jesus aside to talk him out of the suffering: God forbid, Lord, no such thing shall ever happen to you. Jesus' answer is still hard to hear: "Get behind me, Satan." Not because Peter was evil, but because his protective love was trying to close off the very road that leads home. Sometimes the most dangerous temptation isn't sin. It's the comfortable escape from what's hard.
"Deny yourself, take up your cross, follow me." This isn't about becoming less than who you are. It's about letting go of the smaller life you're guarding so tightly, for the sake of a wider one you can only receive with an open hand. Whoever saves his life loses it; whoever loses it finds it. That's not a punishment. It's the one door that actually leads somewhere.
Jeremiah never dressed up his calling. He said God tricked him, and he let himself be tricked, and still he kept carrying the word, because it burned in his bones and he couldn't lock it away. There's a love that wins you over before it ever explains itself, and once you've let that love trick you, you wouldn't trade it back for anything. It isn't calling you to a task, or even just to a way of life. It's calling you to be with him, and to share in what he's living.
Paul isn't asking you to die on the altar. He's asking you to offer yourself as a living sacrifice. The cross was never about your death; it's about a wider life beginning right where the old, tightly guarded one used to be. Whatever you let go of today won't leave a hole in you. It will leave room for something larger.
Today, Let Go of One Thing You're Holding Out of Fear
Name something you're gripping tightly this morning: a plan, an opinion about what others think of you, a security you're afraid to release. You don't need a grand gesture. One choice today, made in the direction of letting go instead of holding tighter, is enough.
If it feels like God has tricked you with something harder than you expected, don't dress it up. Say so, plainly, and ask that whatever you lose today would come back to you from his hand, only larger.
I Praise You, Living God
Heavenly Father, who calls me to yourself, not to a task
I praise you for who you are. You didn't hire me for a job or hand me a role to play: you called me into your own life, the one you live in your Son and your Spirit. That call is larger than anything you could have asked of me instead.
I exalt you for what you do: you never looked at what I'd earned. You looked at me the way you've always looked at us, loving us before any merit, before any flaw could get in the way.
Lord Jesus Christ, who set out for Jerusalem ahead of me
I praise you for who you are. You never sent me down this road alone: you walked through the suffering first, before I had to take a single step of it. You knew what waited for you there, and you didn't turn back.
I exalt you for what you did: you spared yourself nothing, to spare me everything. What you lost on the cross came back to you on the third day, and now you're asking me to walk the same road with you.
Holy Spirit, who turns what I can't stay silent about into fire
I praise you for who you are. You're the fire that burns in the bones and refuses to be shut in: when I try to keep quiet about what I know, you keep burning in me anyway. You won't let me settle for the smaller life.
I exalt you for what you're doing today: renewing my mind, so I stop being conformed to the shape of the world and start recognizing what is good, pleasing, and perfect before you.
Trinity, one God, who brings me home through what I lose
I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father calls me to himself, not to labor but to life; the Son walked the hardest road ahead of me; the Spirit turns what I'm afraid to say into fire. Glory to you, because whatever I let go of for your sake today, I'm not losing it, I'm carrying it home. Glory to you, because you tricked me with a love I would never ask to be repaid for. Amen.
Here I Am, Lord
Here I am, Lord, holding onto exactly what I'm afraid to release this morning: the security I don't dare give up, the plans I'd rather shape myself than hand over to you. I'm not asking for anything else, just show me what actually needs letting go of today.
I place my body and my soul in your hands, a living sacrifice, not so you can take something from me, but so you can make me larger. I place in your hands the loneliness and the anxiety that sometimes sit behind my decisions, and the moments I'll choose the easy road over the harder one.
I place in your hands the people I love, my work, everyone I'll meet today, every small decision that feels like it doesn't matter. Shape me so that whatever I lose today for your sake comes back to me from you, only truer.
A Song to Carry Into the Day
This song says exactly what today's gospel is asking: don't set out alone, follow the one who's already walking ahead of you. Don't just let it play in the background. While it plays, think of whatever you have to let go of today, and tell him you're going anyway, wherever he leads.
