God Is Here Even Now
He isn't watching from a distance, the way a sentry watches from a wall. He steps beside you, and looks from the same place you're looking from.
Whatever you haven't said out loud to anyone yet, he already knows - and he still doesn't turn away.
Today's Guiding Word
"Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." Matthew 18:20
Today's gospel names a hard situation: what do you do when someone sins against you? Jesus doesn't say ignore it, and he doesn't say get even. He says go to that person, alone, just the two of you (Matthew 18:15). If that doesn't work, bring a witness. If that still doesn't work, bring it to the community. Every step is aiming at the same thing - not to win the argument, but to win back the brother. And at the end of it comes the promise: wherever two or three gather in his name, he himself is there among them.
Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence
God gives Ezekiel a strange assignment: he makes him a watchman. Not to judge anyone, but to warn them. If he sees someone heading toward ruin and stays silent, their fall becomes his responsibility too. If he speaks and they don't listen, he's free of it - but staying silent never is. The watchman's job was never to save the other person, only to make sure they didn't walk past him unwarned.
Jesus hands that same responsibility on, in a more human, closer shape. If someone sins against you, don't storm off angry, and don't sit on it in silence either - go to them. Not in front of everyone, not in a way that shames them, but alone, just the two of you. The goal was never to be right - the goal is to get your brother back. Only if that fails does the next step come, and then the next. Jesus doesn't rush you, but he doesn't let you forget either: someone who has drifted is worth going after.
Paul says the same thing from another angle this same day: "owe no one anything, except to love one another" (Romans 13:8). Not because love is one more rule stacked on top of the rest, but because every other rule was always heading there. When you truly love someone, you don't steal from them, lie to them, or hurt them - not because it's forbidden, but because you no longer want to. The letter of a law runs out eventually. Love doesn't.
Where are you looking away today? Maybe there's someone near you who you know is struggling, or has drifted, and you've already decided it isn't your place to say anything. Speaking up was never comfortable for the watchman either. But the one standing beside you today - God - has never once looked past you.
Today, Reach Out to Someone You've Let Drift
There's someone today - a name has probably already come to mind - you've drifted from, or who has drifted from you. Don't wait for them to make the first move. Send a message, make the call, or just ask them: "How are you, really?" You don't have to fix anything.
It isn't about whether you can solve it. It's about whether you're willing to pay attention now.
I Praise You, Living God
Heavenly Father, who makes me a watchman
I praise you for who you are. You entrusted Ezekiel with the work of a watchman, and you give me that same attentiveness every day - not to judge, but to love. You never turn away when I drift; you send someone, or you come after me yourself, like a shepherd who won't let even one sheep go missing from the flock.
I bless you, because you don't count my failures - you watch instead for whether I've found my way home yet. I exalt you, because your love was never handed out by merit - it's simply there, before I've done anything to deserve it.
Lord Jesus Christ, present among us
I praise you for who you are. You said that where two or three gather in your name, you are there among them - and that isn't a nice line, it's a promise you keep every morning someone prays for me, or simply stands beside me. You don't wait until I've finished becoming whoever I'm supposed to be before drawing near; you're already here, exactly where I am.
I exalt you, because your love was never a theory to preach - it's a hand that reaches after me when I wander off. I praise you, because you never measured out how much love I'd earned - you simply came, all the way to the cross, to call me back.
Holy Spirit, who helps me understand in the Spirit
I praise you for who you are. You're the one who won't let me settle for the bare letter of your words - you shape in me the instinct to recognize what love actually is, and what only looks like it. Without you, I'd easily mistake comfort for mercy, or silence for peace.
I bless you, because you give me courage exactly when I'd rather walk away than go to someone. I exalt you, because you make the truth bearable when I have to speak it, and healing when I finally hear it.
Trinity, one God, who never looks away
I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father makes me a watchman; the Son walks among us and calls us home; the Spirit teaches me to understand in the Spirit what I hear. This isn't three separate kinds of attention - it's one love that never turns away, not even when I'm the one turning from it.
Glory to you, because you never let a single wandering sheep get lost, not even me. Glory to you, because you're still here among us, every time two or three in your name go looking for someone who has drifted. Amen.
Here I Am, Lord
Here I am, Lord, with my habit of turning away rather than going to someone who hurt me, or someone I've drifted from. I don't want to keep playing the silent watchman - give me courage to speak where it's needed, and to love even where it's hard.
I place in your hands my body and my soul, the relationships that feel strained or gone cold right now, my family, my work, today's decisions, and everyone I'll meet.
Show me who I need to go to today, and give me the words that heal instead of wound.
