God Is Here Even Now

God is here even now, not because you arranged your morning well enough to earn his attention. This is simply who he is: he comes to wherever you are.

He isn't asking how far you've gotten today. He just sits down beside you, exactly where you happen to be.

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Matthew 9:12

And he adds what that means in practice: I desire mercy, not sacrifice (Matthew 9:13). It's not about how put-together you are. It's about whether you let the one who wants to heal you come close.

Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence

Matthew is sitting at his tax booth when Jesus walks past. There's no long conversation first, no introduction. Just two words: “Follow me.” Matthew gets up. He doesn't ask a question, doesn't request a day to think it over, doesn't list the reasons he's unfit for this. He leaves the money and the table, everything that had been his life until then, and walks away with him.

This is the hardest part of the story to make sense of. A tax collector, someone his own people considered a traitor for working the occupying Romans' books, rises to his feet at a single sentence. Not because he earned the call. Because he heard it.

Then Matthew brings Jesus home for dinner, and invites everyone he used to sit with: tax collectors, sinners. The Pharisees are scandalized. They retreat behind their own respectability and judge from there. Jesus answers them directly: it is not the healthy who need a doctor. He didn't come for the people who already have it together, he came for the ones who know they don't.

Paul, writing today, urges us to live worthy of the calling we've received (Ephesians 4:1). Not to earn it after the fact, but because we already got up once, when we were called. If you're hesitating about something today, before you go any further, think of Matthew. He didn't wait for his life to be in order first. He simply got up.

When you hear today what you should do (an apology, a phone call, a quiet prayer), don't start arguing with yourself about why now isn't the right time.

Stand up before you can talk yourself out of it. That's today's step: the first move, before your mind gets the chance to say no.

Father

Heavenly Father, who looks at the heart, not the résumé

I praise you for who you are: you don't look at where someone has been sitting, you look at who you can call. Matthew sat at a tax booth, a seat his own people would never have shared. You went there anyway, and spoke to him as if that had always been his place.

I bless you, because your calling doesn't audit the past, it opens a future. I exalt you, because when you call me, you don't check my record first. You simply speak, and from that moment the only question is whether I get up. I praise you, because with you the invitation always comes before the worthiness.

Son

Lord Jesus Christ, who turns a whole life around with two words

I praise you for who you are: you walked to the very booth where no one else wanted to sit. You didn't wait for Matthew to clean himself up first. You looked at him, and said only this: follow me.

Your love doesn't weigh how together we are before deciding. It loves first, and the coming-together happens after, with you, along the way. I adore you, because you sat at the table with sinners while everyone else stepped back. I exalt you, because when you chose mercy over sacrifice, you didn't preach a theory, you sat down to dinner with them. I praise you, because with you, closeness is the proof.

Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, who lifts me to my feet before I can decide

I praise you for who you are: you are the quiet force that lifted Matthew out of his chair before he could count the cost. Without you, the call would just be a sentence hanging in the air.

I bless you, because you keep working in me every time I hesitate. I exalt you, because you never let calculation win out over trust. I praise you, because you're the one still whispering in me today: now, not tomorrow.

Trinity

Holy Trinity, one living God who calls before you prove anything

I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father calls, the Son sits down at the table, the Spirit lifts me to my feet. One call, three movements, and a whole life that carries on differently from that moment on.

Glory to you, because today too you walk to my tax booth, wherever it happens to sit in my life. Amen.

Here I Am, Lord

Lord, I bring you this Monday, trusting that today too you'll come to wherever I'm sitting, even if it isn't the most orderly place you'll find me.

I bring you my body, heading into the week, and my soul, with that voice in it that keeps measuring whether I'm good enough to let you close. If loneliness is pressing in, or anxiety is tightening my chest under the weight of a new week, I won't run from it today. I'll set it before you.

I bring you my family, the people I'll meet today, and the decisions ahead of me. Let me start the way Matthew did: not waiting for everything in me to be in order first, just hearing the call, and getting up.

Today's devotional is built on the calling of St. Matthew (Matthew 9:9-13): Jesus speaks a single sentence to the tax collector at his booth, and Matthew gets up immediately and follows, without explanation. Father Barsi's Napi ráhangoló reflection today (via the Zarándok.ma newsletter, since the web blog had not yet posted today's entry) makes exactly this point: when God calls, there's no room for hesitation, only for standing up. Today's Regnum Christi reflection ("Through the Lens of Faith") sets Matthew's simplicity against the Pharisees' complicated calculations. Today's reading (Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13) calls us, in Paul's words, to the same thing: to live worthy of the calling we've received. The Daily Gospel newsletter confirms today's Gospel. Today's Miracle Every Day letter is about God wanting to heal our broken relationships, which fits naturally with the truth that God always moves first, before we get ourselves in order.
