God Is Here Even Now
God is here even now, and he isn't checking how well you've pulled yourself together before coming to him. He doesn't ask for an explanation first. He only asks that you actually listen, right now.
Whatever you're tempted to cover up this morning, even from yourself, you don't need to bring a better version of it here. Come tired, come unsure, come with a quiet kind of joy. None of it turns him away.
Today's Guiding Word
“Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” Proverbs 30:5
What Agur the wise man asks for next isn't a blessing but a kind of protection: that falsehood and lies stay far from him, and that he receive neither poverty nor riches, only what the day actually needs (Proverbs 30:8-9). He isn't bargaining over his circumstances. He's asking to stay clean inside.
Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence
Jesus calls the twelve together, and he doesn't send them off well-supplied. He gives them power, and then strips away almost everything else: no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, not even a spare tunic. Go, just as you are.
This isn't poverty for its own sake. He sends them out empty-handed so they'll lean on the one who sent them, not on their own gear. What you carry has a way of becoming what you trust. In place of a staff, providence now holds them up.
Agur's prayer arrives at the same place from a different direction. He doesn't ask for wealth, and he doesn't ask for poverty either, only enough for the day, and that lies stay far from him. He wasn't protecting his circumstances. He was protecting his soul. He knew that full stomachs make it easy to forget who we've been listening to, and that real need makes it just as easy to lie in order to defend ourselves.
The two pictures, the apostles' empty hands and Agur's careful prayer, point to the same thing. When we carry too much, or explain too much, we start believing our own version of events instead of listening to God. A clean heart isn't a flawless one. It's a heart that hides nothing from God, not even from itself.
Leave one thing unexplained today
Today, the moment you notice yourself dressing something up, for yourself or for someone else, stop for a second.
Say it once, quietly, exactly as it is, not as it would sound better. That's today's step: one honest sentence, with no detour around it.
I Praise You, Living God
Heavenly Father, whose every word proves true
I praise you, because with you there's no split between word and deed: what you say is what happens. I never have to fear that you'll treat me differently from what you promised. Your word is a shield, never a trap.
I bless you, because you don't ask me to explain myself, only to turn to you, even when I arrive with empty hands. I exalt you, because when I ask, like Agur, only for enough, you already know exactly what that is. I praise you, because your abundance was never tied to how much I've stored up.
Lord Jesus Christ, who make empty hands enough
I praise you, because you sent your apostles out carried by your presence, not their equipment. You do the same with me: you don't ask me to be strong enough, ready enough, convincing enough, first. You only ask me to go, as I am.
I adore you, because when I have less than I expected, you don't leave me at the edge of town. I exalt you, because your love isn't a bargain: you give it in advance, with no conditions attached. I bless you, because you're the one provision that never runs out.
Holy Spirit, who won't let me lie to myself
I praise you, because you're the one who quietly stops me before I finish my excuse. You never do it to shame me. You just gently turn my eyes toward where the truth actually is.
I bless you, because your work in me isn't exposure, it's healing. I exalt you, because the purity you give isn't perfection, it's openness: nothing hidden from you. I praise you, because you're the courage that makes today's honesty possible.
Holy Trinity, one living God who gives truth and freedom
I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father's true word holds me steady, the Son sends me out even with empty hands, the Spirit keeps me from lying to my own soul.
With you I don't have to look like more than I am. It's enough that I belong to you. Glory to you, today too, in this very minute. Amen.
Here I Am, Lord
Lord, I bring you this Wednesday, and with it my habit of dressing things up instead of showing you what's actually there. I don't want to hide from you behind my own explanations today.
I bring you my body, however I actually feel this morning, and my soul too, with whatever I haven't even said to myself yet. If loneliness is pressing in, or I'm afraid I'm not enough, I won't dress it up today. I'm placing it in front of you exactly as it is.
I bring you my family, the people I'll meet today, even the ones I find it hard to be honest with. Let me set out after you with empty hands rather than walk full-handed with a dishonest heart.
A Song to Carry Into Today
This song asks for exactly what Agur's prayer asks for: a clean heart, one God shapes, not one we build out of appearances.
