God Is Here Even Now
God is here even now, and he isn't looking for your tidied-up parts. He sees what's still tangled in you this morning too, and stays anyway.
Not because you earned the company. Because he said it once - I am with you always - and words like that, he doesn't take back.
Today's Guiding Word
“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Luke 9:58
Someone on the road tells Jesus, "I will follow you wherever you go." The answer isn't a rejection - it's plain honesty about what's ahead. Jesus is heading toward Jerusalem, and not to rest there, but to walk a road that ends at a cross and still opens into life. Whoever walks beside him should know: there's no ready nest waiting, no ready comfort. Only him.
Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence
Three people approach Jesus on the road today. The first offers to follow wherever he goes. The second is called by Jesus, and asks first to bury his father. The third wants to say goodbye to his family before setting out. Every request sounds reasonable - and yet Jesus answers hard: let the dead bury their dead; no one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.
This isn't coldness on Christ's part. He's teaching the hardest lesson there is: that following doesn't begin once everything around us is settled. It begins now, this minute, with whatever is actually in front of us. A yes with no conditions attached is what sets you free - not because nothing matters anymore, but because your own need for safety finally stops running your life.
In today's reading, Job stands stunned before God's power: mountains move, stars find their places, and still no one can answer God back. That kind of power could terrify - if we didn't know what it became in Christ. Saint Jerome gave his whole life to showing that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. And whoever knows the road Jesus walks toward Jerusalem knows this: the same power that sets the stars in place now walks ahead of you, carrying a cross.
That's why it's still true today that the fight continues - not because we're losing, but because the outcome of the struggle is no longer in doubt. And that's why these few words are worth carrying with you this morning: I am with you always. Not measured by how many of your conditions got met first.
Today's step: one step without looking back
Think of the one thing you've been putting off for days because it's easier to delay - a conversation, a decision, some unfinished business.
Before you do anything else today, start it. Don't talk yourself into one more reason it can wait. Just begin, and say quietly as you do: "You are with me always."
I Praise You, Living God
Heavenly Father, who has already gone ahead on the road
I praise you, Father, because you're the one who sets the stars in their places, and still you bend down to me on this ordinary Wednesday morning. Job stood stunned before your power - I can stand in it with confidence instead, because I already know what that power became in Christ.
I bless you, because you don't ask me to arrange everything around myself first and only then set out after you. You ask me to go now, just as I am, trusting the unfinished parts to your care. I exalt you, because your power never threatens - it always calls me home.
Lord Jesus Christ, who has nowhere to rest your head
I praise you, Lord Jesus, because you made yourself homeless so that I could find my home in you. You set out toward Jerusalem knowing exactly what waits there, and you don't turn aside - because your love is stronger than anything the cross can take from you.
I adore you, because that love isn't an abstract idea. It's a love that walks with me at every step - never running ahead, never falling behind, but keeping pace exactly where I am right now. I bless you, because when I think I have to face today's hard things alone, you're already standing in the middle of the struggle, and you don't walk away from it.
Holy Spirit, who makes Scripture come alive in me
I praise you, Holy Spirit, because you're the one who turns letters on a page into a living word inside me - the way Saint Jerome spent his whole life laboring so that everyone could hear Christ's call in their own language. Without you, Scripture would stay an old story; with you, it becomes God's voice speaking to me this morning.
I bless you, because you're shaping in me the kind of courage that doesn't look back once it has started. I exalt you, because you patiently teach me to stand steady in uncertainty - not because I'm strong, but because you're holding me.
Holy Trinity, one living God who carries the road with me
I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father sets the stars and my days alike in their places, the Son became homeless to walk with me, the Spirit makes the call to set out come alive in me.
What I let go of today, I can let go of because you are with me always. Glory to you, today too, this very morning. Amen.
Here I Am, Lord
Lord, I kneel here this morning, with this tired body and a soul that may already be counting up everything it will have to carry today.
I bring you my loneliness, if there's an hour like that today, and my anxiety too, if worry is already crowding in before the day begins. I'm not asking you to take the uncertainty away - only to stay in it with me.
I bring you my family, my work, today's decisions and encounters. When something calls me to look back, let me turn toward you instead - not toward my own sense of safety, but toward the place where you're already waiting.
A Song to Carry Into Today
This song says exactly what today's Gospel says: everything else can be let go, as long as Christ remains - because he alone is enough to set out after.
