Arrival

God is here even now

Before you take hold of anything today, open your palm for a moment. God did not come close in order to take something from you. He is simply here, looking on you with kindness, before you have accomplished a single thing from this day.

Maybe the list was already there when you woke: what has to be kept, what mustn't be lost, what has to work out. Set it down for a minute. Nothing disappears just because you stop gripping it now. Notice your breath, the light on the curtain, the weight that sits on your shoulders. God arrives into this minute, not into some better, tidier one.

Today's Guiding Verse

Today's guiding word

„Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’” Matthew 19:21

Listen for where the weight of the sentence falls. Not on „sell,” but on „come, follow me.” Jesus wasn't trying to take something from the young man; he was making room for himself beside him. A hand that is full cannot hold on to anyone.

What I can repeat within myself today My worth is not measured by what I own, or by what I achieve. Today I walk with an open hand: I won't clutch what passes, because the one walking beside me is eternal.

Step toward the light in God's presence

In today's Gospel a young man comes up to Jesus and asks the biggest question there is: what good must I do to gain eternal life? He means it. He has kept the commandments since childhood, his hands are clean, his life is in order. And still, when Jesus reaches his heart with a single sentence, he turns back in sorrow. He didn't suddenly become a sinner. It only became clear what he was holding on to more tightly.

Notice exactly what happens. The young man doesn't leave because Jesus was harsh with him. He leaves because his hands were full, and a full hand cannot grasp. Whatever you clutch also clutches you. His wealth wasn't the problem; the problem was that his wealth filled his life more than the things above did. You know this too, and not necessarily in the form of money. It can be a point you refuse to concede, a hurt you keep warm, a plan you press to your chest, a role you can't imagine yourself without.

And here comes the most beautiful turn of the day. In today's first reading Ezekiel loses the delight of his eyes, his wife, and God asks him: do not mourn out loud, sigh in silence. It sounds cruel until you see it: the prophet's whole life has become a sign. It wasn't his words that carried the message, but the way he lived and the way he lost. This is the state of the believer in the world: to live among your contemporaries as a sign of eternal life, not bound to what is already sentenced to pass away.

This isn't coldness. It doesn't mean loving your people less, or your work, or the warmth of your home. It means not leaning your whole weight on them. As Paul puts it: let those who buy live as though they had no possessions, for the form of this world is passing away. There is something freeing in that. If you own nothing with a clenched fist, nothing can really rob you.

And take with you today's clarifying question: in a hundred years, how much of this will matter? So much of what grinds you down in the morning won't matter by tomorrow. The driver who cut you off, the sentence that stung, the list you didn't finish. What remains is the one relationship not even death can take from you. You don't have to let go of everything today. One thing is enough.

Today's Step

Open your hand once today

Find one thing today that you are gripping, and release it concretely, not just in your thoughts. It can be something you can hold: give away something of yours to someone who needs it. It can be half an hour of your time, spent on somebody else. It can be an insult you decide not to repeat to anyone today.

And where you can't speak about God, shine instead. One encouraging sentence, one piece of gossip refused, a smile that holds even when there's no reason for it. Where he can't be talked about, he can still be made visible. That's all today asks: an open hand, an open face. No one is ever made poorer by what they let go of for God.

Praising the Holy Trinity

I praise you, living God

Father

My heavenly Father, who alone are good

I praise you for who you are. Jesus said that you alone are good, and today that is good news to me. I don't have to scrape goodness together on my own; there is someone I can receive it from. Blessed are you, because you are not an owner but a Father, and what you give, you don't lend out of fear.

I magnify you for what you give. My life is not something I acquired; it is your gift, and so is my bread, the light in my eyes, the people who love me. Blessed are you, because I live from your hand, and your hand is open. What I received from you was never meant to be clutched, only passed on.

Son

Lord Jesus Christ, who looked with love on the rich young man

I praise you for who you are. You did not haggle, and you did not make yourself cheaper so my yes would come more easily. You spoke the truth, and you looked with love on the very one who walked away from you. You are the one treasure no moth can eat, and the one road that doesn't end in a wall.

I magnify you for what you have done. You became poor so that I might be rich; you hung on the cross with empty hands so that I would have something to hold. Blessed is your name, because you don't measure me by what I own, but call me to yourself: come, follow me. That call still sounds today, and it is still open.

Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, who open the clenched hand

I praise you for who you are. You are the Spirit of freedom, who never tears anything out of my grip by force, but slowly loosens the cramp inside me. It is from you that I even dare to ask the question: what am I holding on to more tightly than to you? Even my yes is your work.

I magnify you for what you do today. You make me a sign where I'm not allowed to speak; you shine in me when kindness is the only language left. Move through me today, so I live not from possessing but from you, and so that in whatever I pass on, it is you they touch.

Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity, one God, who make me not smaller but free

I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God, in whom nothing given to you is ever lost. I live from the Father's hand; the Son looks on me with love even when I am slow to move; the Spirit softens what has gone hard in me. Glory to you where I let one thing go today, and what stays in its place is not emptiness but room. Glory to you where I cannot speak of you, and am seen in you anyway. Glory to you, because eternal life is not a reward saved for later, but begins here and now, in every open hand and every minute given away. Amen.

Morning Surrender

Here I am, Lord

Here I am, Lord. I bring this body that is already tired in the morning, and this heart that clings to so many things. Thank you for not being ashamed of it. You know what my life has stuck itself to, and you didn't come to tear it away, but to open it.

I set before you whatever fills me most today: the worry, the plan, the grievance, the fear of losing something. If you take it from my hand today, give me yourself instead. If you leave it with me, let me hold it freely.

I entrust to you my family and everyone I love. I entrust to you my work, today's decisions, the encounters I can't yet see coming. Where I can't speak of you, make me light: one encouraging sentence, one kind word, one smile that holds can be enough to move something in someone.

And if sadness floods me again today, that what I have is too little, remind me of that young man who walked away from you rich in everything and still empty. Don't let me go that way. It is enough for me that you are. Amen.

Stay quiet for two minutes, palms open on your knees. Ask for nothing. Just let God fill what is empty.

Today's Worship Song

What you can also sing today

Today's song repeats a single line, and that line is exactly today's question: „you can have all this world, give me Jesus.” The rich young man couldn't say it. You can say it today, quietly, in a song. Don't listen to it as background music; while it plays, keep your palms open, and name to him the one thing you're letting go of today.

Take This With You

Whatever I clutch also clutches me. Today I open my hand on one thing, and where I can't speak of him, I shine instead.

The heart of today's companion is Monday's Gospel: the rich young man (Mt 19:16-22), who kept everything and still went away sad. The main thread came from Balázs Barsi's reflection for the day (08.17), „Living as a sign of eternal life,” which ties today's first reading (Ez 24:15-24) and Paul's word (1 Cor 7:29-31) to the young man's calling. Regnum Christi's meditation for the day (08.17) sharpened it: possessing isn't the problem, what fills our life more is. The practical measure came from Daily Hope (08.16, „What Really Counts in Life,” Phil 3:8): in a hundred years, how much of this will matter? The outward half of today's step grew out of A Miracle Every Day (08.17): where you can't speak of God, make him visible by goodness (Mt 5:16). The serenity of receiving the day came from the Cistercian House message for the day (08.17): „Receive every day just as it comes!” First15 (08.16) called us to feed on the word. Note: on Balázs Barsi's blog (barsitelekmm.blogspot.com) Sunday's entry was still the latest this morning, so today's full reflection was taken from the Daily Attunement newsletter. The Gmail sources were all reachable.

Earlier Days

What we carry on together

Yesterday a woman stood before a shut door and would not move: we learned that silence is not a refusal. Today a young man stands in an open door and turns back anyway, because his hands were full. The two are the same gesture from opposite sides: hold on to the one who is eternal, and let go of what isn't.
