God Is Here Even Now
You don't need to scan the horizon to find out whether God is near. He's already in this room with you, right where you're sitting, before you've said a single word to him.
What matters this morning isn't how closely you're watching for him, but that he's already watching over you. That order is the reverse of what you'd expect.
Today's Guiding Word
"So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." Matthew 24:44
That same day, Paul strikes an entirely different note: before he asks the Corinthians for anything, he thanks God for what they've already received. "You were enriched in him in every way" (1 Corinthians 1:5), and not because they earned it. In Christ, it was already theirs.
Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence
The servant in Jesus' story doesn't get caught out because he dozes off for a moment. He's caught unprepared because somewhere along the way he stopped believing his master was actually coming back. The danger was never tiredness. It was the quiet suspicion of having been left alone.
A message that arrived this morning says the same thing in different words: "My presence stays with you." It doesn't say watch harder, or don't fall asleep. It says he's already there before you've done a thing about your own watchfulness. The watch you're keeping today isn't a lonely post down some dark corridor. Someone is already standing it with you.
Augustine's conversion took years, and all his mother Monica could do in the meantime was pray and wait. She had no way of knowing when the moment would come. Her patience wasn't even the real miracle. The miracle was that she never stopped watching just because nothing had happened yet. What kept her awake wasn't fear; it was trust that God wouldn't drop what she'd handed him.
And here's the turn Paul makes to the Corinthians: before you prove anything at all, you are already rich in Christ. Watchfulness, then, was never about earning his love. It's about not sleeping through a gift that's already been placed in your hands.
Don't keep watch alone today
Pick one thing from your day where you've been trying to stay alert entirely on your own: a decision, a wait, a person you're worried about. Say it out loud if you can: "Lord, I'm handing this to you now, and I know you're already awake beside it."
Then let go of the pressure to hold everything together yourself. The watch you're keeping today goes easier with company.
I Praise You, Living God
Heavenly Father, who never falls asleep beside me
I praise you for who you are. You're the one who doesn't rest when I grow tired, and you never leave me alone on a single night watch. Before I can even say what I'm afraid of, you're already standing next to it.
I exalt you for what you do. You don't ask me to be watchful enough on my own; you keep watch over me the moment my own eyes close.
Lord Jesus Christ, who named the hour we cannot know
I praise you for who you are. You didn't speak about watchfulness to frighten me, but to teach me not to sleep through a relationship that's a matter of life and death. You yourself stood the last watch through to the end, the night everyone around you fell asleep.
I exalt you for what you did. On the cross you showed that real watchfulness isn't dread; it's faithfulness carried all the way through.
Holy Spirit, who keeps hope awake in me
I praise you for who you are. You're the quiet fire that won't let my waiting go out, even when years pass without an answer in sight. In Monica, you kept hope alive for a son everyone else would have given up on.
I exalt you for what you're doing this morning. Keep awake in me what I was nearly ready to let go of, and teach me to wait in a way that doesn't wear me down to nothing.
Trinity, one God, whose presence stays with me
I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father never falls asleep beside me, the Son stood the last watch in my place, the Spirit keeps hope awake in me when I'd rather give up. Glory to you, because the watchfulness you call me to was never a lonely burden, but a watch kept together with you. Glory to you, because whatever I hand you today, you don't drop it. Amen.
Here I Am, Lord
Here I am, Lord, with this body that some mornings wants sleep more than watchfulness. I place my tiredness in your hands, and the loneliness that surfaces whenever I feel like I have to stay alert to everything by myself.
I place in your hands the people I've been waiting years for something to change in: a conversion, a healing, a word that still hasn't been spoken. Let me wait the way Monica waited: not anxious, but trusting.
I place my decisions today in your hands, my work, everyone I'll meet along the way. Wherever I need to stay alert today, remind me I'm not standing that watch alone. Wherever I'd only be afraid, give me attention that comes from you instead.
Stay awake in this quiet for one more minute before you do anything else. He already knows about you.
