God Is Here Even Now
God is here even now, and he doesn't wait for you to work everything out before he speaks to you.
He isn't in a hurry. But he has something to say this morning, and all that's asked of you is to listen.
Today's Guiding Word
“Let these words sink into your ears: the Son of Man is going to be delivered into human hands.” Luke 9:44
Jesus says this in the middle of a crowd still buzzing over what they just watched him do. While everyone marvels at his greatness, he turns to his own disciples and shifts into a different register entirely. No explanation, no argument. Just a request: pay attention. That's what today is asking of you too: before you understand what it holds, listen to it first.
Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence
The crowd is still standing around, stunned, because Jesus has just freed a boy who'd been tormented for years. They're marveling at the greatness of God, Luke tells us. And right in that charged moment, when everyone would rather keep celebrating, Jesus leans toward his disciples and lowers his voice: “Let these words sink into your ears. The Son of Man is going to be delivered into human hands.”
It doesn't fit the mood. The crowd sees triumph, and Jesus is talking about the cross. And the disciples don't ask. Luke notes it specifically: they were afraid to ask what it meant. Not because they didn't care, but because sometimes the question itself feels too large to say out loud.
Ecclesiastes says something similar with entirely different imagery: remember your Creator while you're young, before the hard days arrive. Life is shorter than it feels, which is exactly why it's worth not postponing what could be heard today. Not because God is rushing you, but because the attention you withhold from him this morning may simply go elsewhere tomorrow.
This morning a quiet note said only this: “come to me, and pay attention.” It doesn't ask you for an explanation, or an answer right away. Only that you stay close, even while what he's saying hasn't come together into something you fully understand yet. Understanding, most of the time, only comes after you've listened long enough.
Today's step: one minute of listening
Before you reach for your phone this morning, give yourself one minute of quiet, no questions, no answers.
Don't try to understand anything yet; just be present. If a sentence, a face, or a worry surfaces, don't push it away. Simply notice it, the way you'd notice something in God's presence.
I Praise You, Living God
Heavenly Father, who has known me as your own since before I began
I praise you, Father, because you spoke me into being, and ever since, you've been the one who remembers me first, not the other way around. I don't have to explain myself to you, because you know me before I say a word.
I bless you, because you never rush my understanding, yet you keep speaking to me faithfully, day after day, whether I'm listening or not. I exalt you, because you're the Creator Ecclesiastes tells me to keep finding again, young or old. I praise you, because your time never runs out, even when mine feels like it does.
Lord Jesus Christ, who lowers your voice so I can hear you
I praise you, Lord Jesus, because even in the middle of a crowd celebrating you, you turn to me and say something I might not grasp right away. Your love was never conditional on my understanding it instantly; it's enough that I stay, and let your words keep working in me afterward.
I adore you, because you walked through exactly what you described that day: delivered into human hands, humiliated, and still obedient all the way to death on a cross, and because of that, God gave you the name above every name. I exalt you, victorious King, because you already won the fight against shame, loneliness, and every crushing weight I could never defeat on my own. I bless you, because your love asks nothing in return; you give it freely, having already paid for it once, completely.
Holy Spirit, who quietly teaches me to listen
I praise you, Holy Spirit, because you're shaping in me the kind of ear that hears what God says, even when the words don't add up right away. You don't over-explain the mystery; you sit with me in it until it ripens.
I bless you, because you gave the disciples the grace to remember this very sentence later, after the resurrection, and finally understand it. I exalt you, because you work in me the same way: not all at once, but step by step, as much as I can carry. I praise you, because you're a living Fire, and your flame doesn't burn; it makes me attentive.
Holy Trinity, one living God who never rushes me
I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father has remembered me from before time, the Son lowers his voice so I can hear him, the Spirit quietly teaches me to listen.
With you, a sentence I don't yet understand is never lost; it simply waits until I'm ready for it. Glory to you, today too, in this very minute. Amen.
Here I Am, Lord
Lord, I bring you this Saturday, along with everything in it I still don't understand.
I bring you my body, however tired or however alive it feels right now, and my soul too, with whatever stillness or restlessness lives there. I don't have to have an answer for everything today; it's enough to listen, and let you speak first.
I bring you my family, the people I'll meet today, the decisions ahead of me, and every difficulty I haven't found words for yet. Let me not reach first for the quick answer, but for the quiet I can only find with you.

This song asks for exactly what you were invited into this morning: that God would speak, and that you'd stay quiet enough to listen, before you understand any of it.
