Arrival

God Is Here Even Now

God is here even now, not because you'll finish everything on time today. He simply settles in beside you, wherever you happen to be - next to the coffee going cold, among the lists not yet written, in these few minutes you're giving him.

He isn't asking you to prove you've earned his attention. He's only asking you to sit beside him a moment before you get up to work.

Today's Guiding Verse

Today's Guiding Word

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing.” Luke 10:41-42

Martha isn't gently corrected because she serves - she's corrected because, in the middle of serving, she loses sight of the one she's serving for. Her hands are full, and her heart is searching for an empty place to rest. Mary simply takes that empty place: she sits, and she listens. Jesus doesn't say Martha's work is pointless - he says one thing can't be replaced by anything else.

What I can repeat within myself today Today I won't prove I matter by how much I finish - I'll sit down and let him matter instead.
Spiritual Companion

Walk Toward the Light in God's Presence

The house Jesus walks into isn't so different from yours. There's a woman who loves and wants to serve, and somewhere inside that love a weight builds, because she feels like she's carrying it alone. Martha isn't lazy or faithless - quite the opposite. She wants so badly to get everything right that she loses track of who all of it is for.

Mary sits in the other corner of the room, adding nothing useful to the meal. To the eyes of that culture, it was almost scandalous: a disciple's place at someone's feet belonged to a man, not to a woman who should have been in the kitchen. Yet Jesus praises her - not because listening outranks cooking, but because Mary chose the one thing that wouldn't slip out of her hands. The meal will run out, the guests will leave, but what she hears now, she carries with her.

In today's reading, Paul says something similar about himself: before he'd done a single thing for God, God had already set him apart from his mother's womb. The calling wasn't born from his achievement - it came before it. That order matters for you too: you aren't dear to God because you get enough done. You're able to do your best precisely because, before you do anything at all, you already belong to him.

So you don't have to choose between Martha and Mary, as if one were right and the other wrong. The question today isn't whether you'll work - you will. The question is where you'll work from: out of the anxiety that it all rests on you, or out of the stillness you can already receive, even sitting still.

Today's Step

Today's step: sit down before you stand up

Before you dive into today's tasks, give it two minutes: sit down, put down whatever's in your hands, and do nothing. Don't plan, don't run through your list - just be there, the way Mary was there.

If you catch yourself later today keeping score of who's helping and who isn't, pause for one breath and ask what you'd choose right now, if you actually let yourself choose.

Praising the Holy Trinity

I Praise You, Living God

Father

Heavenly Father, who chose me from the womb

I praise you, Father, because your love didn't start on the day I finally got my act together. You knew and chose me before I had a single good deed behind me - your grace came before anything I could earn, just as it did for Paul. I bless you, because you don't love me by my output; you love me because I'm yours.

I exalt you, because you never measure my day by how many boxes I checked off it. I adore you, because when I sit before you empty-handed, that's exactly what you wanted from me - not my performance, but me.

Son

Lord Jesus Christ, who called sitting at your feet the better part

I praise you, Lord Jesus, because when you walked into Martha's house, you didn't ask for dinner first - you asked for attention. I bless you, because you come into my day the same way - not to check how much I've accomplished, but to sit with me a moment before we do anything else.

I exalt you, because you chose the better part yourself on the cross, when you set down everything in your hands and fixed your eyes on one thing: the Father's will. I adore you, because this kind of love - unhurried, simply present - is your gift, not something I worked up myself.

Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, who makes a stillness even in a noisy kitchen

I praise you, Holy Spirit, because you're the one who can quiet the rushing in me without taking away a single task. I bless you, because when my heart shouts that I have to solve everything alone, you quietly pull up a chair and sit me down.

I exalt you, because you don't ask me to stop everything - you ask me to turn toward you in the middle of it. I adore you, because you're the stillness that stays within reach even when everything around me is loud.

Trinity

Holy Trinity, one living God, present even in the quiet

I praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one living God. The Father chose me before the beginning; the Son called me to his feet; the Spirit teaches me to sit down even when everything says keep running.

Today I don't want to prove how much I can carry - I want to know that, even sitting still, I already belong to you. Glory to you, this morning too. Amen.

Morning Surrender

Here I Am, Lord

Lord, here I am, and I'm setting down what I carried in with me - the list that isn't finished, and the feeling that I have to hold it all together.

I bring my body, which may be tired, and my soul, where loneliness hides, or the fear that what I give is never enough. I don't want to serve in a way that loses sight of you in the middle of serving - teach me to sit down before I start working.

I bring my family, my work, today's decisions and encounters. Let it not be the part of me that wants to solve everything alone that wins out, but the part that knows: it's enough to stay close to you.

Thank you for wanting me, not my output.

Today's Worship Song

This song is about the one thing that doesn't change while everything else does: your love. Don't let this play in the background - let it be your Mary moment, before you head back to the kitchen.

Take This With You

Only one thing is necessary - everything else can wait while you sit down.

Today's core comes from the Gospel (Luke 10:38-42, Martha and Mary) and the first reading (Galatians 1:13-24, Paul's calling before he was even born): God's love comes before our output, and Jesus asks for attention first, not service. The Ciszterci Ház letter on walking by faith, the Miracle Every Day letter on praying with expectation, and the Regnum Christi reflection on the Martha-and-Mary scene all reinforced this same thread. Fr. Barsi Balázs's primary source (barsitelekmm.blogspot.com) didn't carry a post for today - the blog currently appears stuck on an old archive - so it was left out. The Jesus Calling devotional hadn't posted today's (Oct 6) edition by 7 a.m. Hungarian time, so yesterday's (Oct 5) letter was used instead, for its thought on trust and a steady heart. Today, October 6, is the memorial of Saint Bruno, founder of the Carthusians - a life given over entirely to silence, which quietly tunes into today's Gospel.

Earlier Days

The road we walk together

Yesterday was about not calculating who deserves your love before turning toward them; today carries that further: you don't have to prove you deserve his attention either - you only have to sit down for it.
